Growing out ideas for a 75

I have a 75 gallon with a snowflake eel and a chain link eel that had a porcupine puffer that I was growing out for a while, however he got too big so I gave him to my friend for his large aggressive tank. I tend to like keeping fish that all seem to get too big, but I don't have the money or room to keep a large tank so I tend to just grow fish out then give them to people who have the room for them. I'm ready for a new fish now and have an empty tank other than the eels and want to get something more aggressive for a change. Does anyone know an interesting grouper or a type of trigger that I could keep for about a year or two before they become too large for my tank? I'd like it to be something aggressive but also that won't bother my eels as they are the two fish that I always keep. Thanks.

You could go with a Humu humu , Bursa , Undulated , Rectangular trigger . I would stay away from groupers . They tend to be messy eaters and put a heavy load on your filtration . Another option if you want lots of movement Would be damsels . They do not eat other fish but they do tend to be very bold and some are down right mean as they get bigger .

Not to streamline your pick too much, but I would suggest the Huma. Being a trigger it is most likely to show aggression, and they grow quite slowly (in a year mine has grown about 1/2" at most). If you got a small one, only an inch or so you could get years out of it before you would have to give it away IMO. By that time you may well have the means to upgrade. One of my favorite fish so I am a little partial.

I agree . Very colorful and attitude that is manageable plus a slow growth rate .

You can also try a Lion. A Volitan would last a while in your tank or a Fuzzy Dwarf which, should only get to be around 6-7 inchs. I have two groupers in my tank and they are not that bad as far as the mess goes (IMO of course). Just have a decent cleaning crew and you should be good to go. A big Tomoato clown would be a good one as well, always moving and real hardy. I would also have to agree as well with everyone esle as far as the Huma Huma Trigger. Good Luck!

I've pretty much abandon the idea of a grouper. I feel like my bio load can handle it because I don't have much fish but I don't want to risk it either. I like the idea of a volitan and a trigger but know I can't mix them so i'm deciding between them. How long could a volitan live in my 75 before it outgrows it? I'm fine with the fact of finding a fish a new home after 2 years or so when they outgrow my tank but having a fish outgrow it after just 8 months would be too far for me.

I have both a Volitan and a Huma Huma Trigger in my tank and there is never been a problem. I think a 75 Gal. Tank will give plenty of room for both fish to co-exist. However, I can only give advice based on my own experiance's and by far I am no expert. If you are concerned about the size try the Fuzzy instead of the Volitan. Then you should never have to be concerned with the size issue.

I would be VERY careful of the trigger/lion combo. Both great fish, but you will most likely end up with just the trigger...after he murders your lion in cold blood.

I agree especially with a more dominant trigger like a Humu Bursa or Undulated

I have had no problems with the combo. Got them in a 150 w/ plenty of room for the two of them. Was advised by my LFS that the the pair would be fine and so far he is true to his word. What have you heard or experienced that I should be aware of?
