GSP taking over

Is it possible to “peel” green star polyps off of live rock and let them attach somewhere else? They seem to be taking over my tank. I am not sure how to direct their growth to areas that I would like them to grow and away from areas I don’t want them. I was happy that they were spreading at first but now I its out of control. Any advice would be great.

Never have personally tried it, but I have heard YES you can peel the purple off and put somewhere else. GSP are pretty hardy anyhow, so I would be suprised if it didn't work.

Yes you can but I have always had trouble with doing that. I have the same problem you do and in fact the damn thing moved in on my finger leather and killed it. I couldn't stop the encroachment. I just try to isolate the rocks it has spread to and then once completely covered trade it in to the LFS.

I tried to peel a little a few weeks back. It did not feel like it wanted to come off so I just left it alone. I thought that there might be some sort of trick to doing it. I don't want to have to change my aquascaping but I guess I might have to. Ags when you tried to peel it did you use your fingers or did you have some sort of tool like a knife or pick

Yeah it's pretty hard peeling it off rock. But if you get it to grow on the glass then its very easy and you could control it then.

Gsp's have always been know to have the potential to rapidly overrun a system. They can be a very quick grower! They will sometimes grow on small LR chunks placed nearby and can then easily be removed or re-located. I've heard of several reefers encouraging them to grow on overflows and/or glass/acrylic.....they can then be removed and glued for trading.
The small colony I have is surrounded by mushrooms and has never really spread much. My thinking is the assorted 'shrooms tend to keep them at bay...:cool:
