gurgling overflow

Hey all,
I really need help, my overflow setup has been driving my wife crazy. I have a 90 gallon reef setup, all the usuals, amiracle sump with a hang on the side of the sump protein skimmer. Here is the problem the tank is drilled, and the feed to the sump is sucking air and gurgling. The tank is drilled with two feeds to the sump, one on top of the other on the back side of the tank, with the second being a backup in case the lower one clogs up. Any suggestionson how to stop the noise. I saw the previous post, but it looked like the tank was drilled at the bottom. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I hope this helps...My tank is not drilled, I have an overflow box, but it may still work. I used a piece of airline tubing in the overflow, and it really worked well. Just put it down a couple feet. Try it and let me know if it worked!

hi, you looked at the previous post and the site:http://www.rl180reef.com/pages/standpipe/standpipe-open.htm
if your overflow box is something like this, and with enough dimension, you can modify it by putting 1 or 2 elbow pvc at the bottom and same configuration going up. maybe you can plug one hole with an end cap. just a suggestion.

if your tank has 2 holes drilled in side one ontop another get 2 90" deg elbows for each hole make one goone way useing 2 90 and one the other then make standpipes like the link above

Sorry to step on toes, but if you constantly restrict the flow from the return pump you can burn the pump out very quickly. This back pressure is not good for the pump.

I was told by Little Giant that if you put a ball valve on the output of the pump, it will not hurt. Only if you restrict the input to the pump.
Try the Durso standpipe. Worked for me.

Ive got an Oceanic reef ready. I converted it to the Durso standpipe and have no complaints. The only tricky part is adjusting the air so the water level in the overflow will stay consistant and not move up and down(caused by lack of or too much air).HTH

I have a ball valve on mine, because I like to have some control over my water level if I have problems.
Sometimes I have forgotten to top off the tank, and the pump begins to suck in air. I just tighten the ball valve slightly until I can get some water top off water into the tank. I will check into keeping it restricted slightly and return with the info later. BTW I have a mag 5.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the help. To clarify, the two feeds to the sump are at the top of the refugium, one on top of the other about three inches on center apart. I put a short piece of pipe out of the bottom return, with a t connector on it, then put a short piece on top with a cap on it. Then I put a piece of pvc almost to the bottom of the refugium. I drilled a couple of holes in the top cap, to relieve the air pressure. This helped tremendously, except that it still gurgles. Also I put a piece of airline tubing down it and it quieted it some more. As far as a ball valve, I did that initially to stop the amount of air bubbles coming into the tank. When I added my ps I used the line off the ball valve as a feed, and it worked perfectly. Just some advice if it helps anyone. Thanks everyone for all the help.
