H.Kellogi Seahorse Info????

Ok i'm back again! I recently decided that I was going to turn my tank into a seahorse tank, with that said I have been going through info for the past year. So for the 3 months I finally am at the right stage (I think) I transformed my 5 Gallon and 55 Gallon over (were for SW Fish). The only problem was I couldnt decide, so I choose DS then I learned hatching BBS could be a nightmare
so...I was looking at the H.Kellogi?? Does anyone know anything about them or even have any? My LPS has 3 left, and is asking 34.99 a piece. He QT's them for 30 days and then puts them for sale. I know this because I have been in there almost every week, and they have been in the "holding tank". My levels are good with
Amon. .02

Nitrate 0.0

Nitrite 0.0
Ph 8.2

Temp 72

However I do have live rock (been in the tank for 2 years) Should this be removed? What else will need to be done? Please any info would be helpful!!!
Thanks

live rock is fine, just be sure its not slam full. Leave some open area in from with hitches. you can add some macros for them to hitch or fake plants or corals.
Be sure they are eatting frozen food. I have heard that the kellogis that are around are pen or net raised so they may need to be wormed.
Good Luck

Thanks!!! They are indeed eating frozen, if its one thing i've learned it's that. Are they a very difficult species? I know people have saud before get reidi as a first but I want to buy locally NOT shipped as I am scared for all the stress. They look great, but I have heard horror stories
. Just scared of actually buying
. Oh the day has come!! HA HA

I have never had this species, only erectus, but have read they do better at lower temps. There is someone here with kellogi, I will go look for ya. I didnt find much here, but did elsewhere. These are a deep water species that people havent had much luck keeping more then 4 or 5 mo. if these have been in qt for a month then they may be ok. keep the temps down, lights low and feed enriched food. also look into worming them.

Thanks for the info. I may try to skip them then. I do NOT want to get a seahorse to have it die. I am going back tomorrow so she may be able to get different ones. Also I have heard that LPS get them mixed up with other species, so I printed a few pics off to take with me to compare. I was told they commonly get mistaken to the Great Seahorse??? I will check into that.

I would ask if they can get ora horses or look for a local breeder. erectus are really nice and easier to raise the fry.

To get an ID on them make sure you get a nice side on shot of their head.
I agree that people have not been very successful with the kelloggi.
Where do you live? We may be able to find some hobbyist breeders in your area. The best horses I have bought, I did so online from reputable breeders. It's the only way I buy horses now.

I have heard that their sucess rate is slim...I live in North Carolina, and have been to every LFS but only 3 carry them.

so far looking good--I would pile those rocks up more in the corners, add some macros for pod breeding and hitches. you can add the fake plants, and also fake corals. add some color-red and yellow-horses will tank on the colors from thier homes. When I had horses I used tall plants and fake stag corals. The horses loved to hang out on them (they are in storage now) I miss my horses

Also what is all the bubbles in the back of tank.

I think the bubble wand should go. they arent really good for sw tanks. A lot of keepers will keep a single air line, but not the bubble wands.
Have you decided on a species of horse?

I have only seen one in tenn and on in ct. Maybe your lfs could order some from ora for you. Mine just got in some really nice erectus.
I really like southern erectus. Thier fry hitch at birth and are bigger then most others.

I never had luck with Kellogi and i've heard others say the same. So i would probably go with a different type if this is your first horse for sure.
What type of other species did he say he could order? I've not read the entire thread so if what i just said is a repeat or doesn't make any since just ignore me

Everyone was buying up the kelloggi's over a year ago when they flooded the market .... I don't hear any of those people saying they still have them.
