Although excellent products, mechanical filters such as Magnums and Emperors don't serve too much of a purpose in a salt water setup, unless you have a FO tank and are just looking to filter out larger debris from the water. In this same application, they also double as oversized powerheads for water movement.
They are also useful for clearing up water for newly setup tanks ("sandstorms"), or running media such as carbon or nitrate remover.
The most beneficial form of filtration for a salt water setup, be it reef, fish, or both, is a skimmer. Invest in a good one. It doesn't make any sense to spend your hard earned money on expensive fish and coral, only to have their health fail because of poor water quality.

What do you think of an AquaClear 500 filter or a Penquin BIO-Wheel 350? I am setting up a 90-100 gallon setup. I dont want to have a sump so everything will be HOB or submersed in the tank.

The aqua Clear makes a great hob mechanical filter, much better than the other brands for the simple reason it can readily be adapted to hold various forms of filtering materials and additives like AC or puri gen etc very easy, and it can also be turned into a mini fuge with relative ease and is big enough to hold a heater if need be.
My lfs currently has a close out on a heap of Hydor filter units he got cheap from his distributor, and even though they are dirt cheap and move lots of water I am not particularly fond of them as your nailed down to oem filter materials and they have very little volume of water....
