You can laugh...that is a good thing. My two year old grandson distroyed a two day old skimmer. He is now known as the fishtank terror. He also fed my fish a wienner with mustard. I stopped him before he tossed in the penny. Every coral was in danger from him.
He is not allowed in the room with the tank alone at any time. He is 4 now and I still won't leave him alone in there. ADVICE...Once a kid finds the tank, they just won't leave it alone.
So be smart...the fish food is just the beginning.
The only reason little kids live till adulthood sometimes is the cute factor LOL I love my little guy, I love my fish too.

I agree with Flower...My grandchildren are not allowed in my fish room w/o me. If I still had small children...ALL FISH SUPPLIES would be locked up...or wayyyyy out of reach....Not as much for the fish, but some of that stuff could be lethal if a child were to try to eat it......keep that in mind...

Yeah my little one is curious about the fish stuff, but I have all the chemicals in a box thats locked then it's in the cabinet with the food and top off water and thats locked. Still have to watch her like a hawk though seems like just when I think somethings child proof she gets into it

All my chemicals are up in closet but this was an old can of flake food that the wife had for gold fish. Funny thing is just the other day i saw the can in her office, and i told my self i better throw that away before some kid poors it all over the floor. tank is filled back up and cycleing once again though lol.

LOL Wayyyy out of reach...locked up. My Andrew is proof that there is no such thing. No, when he comes to visit, I just stand guard till he goes home.

Every one of my grandkids had something they terrorized me with. Amanda was my plucker, no plant or flower ever had a chance. She is 8 now, I moved to this new house and she came to see me...within 10 minutes she plucked my only tulip from the new yard.
Alyssa was my trinket killer, no little doodad can be resisted. She coined the phrase, “Don't look Nana, it will just upset you.” She was right; if I saw what she broke I would just get upset.
Each child is dearly loved, but every child is different. When they find that one thing that just fascinates them there is no keeping it out of reach, just stand guard. The wall artists, the fish feeders, the refrigerator toys that make such wonderful messes. Oh the stories I could tell.

LOL...Jaicey my 5 year old granddaughter (at her mother's house..not mine) Took a gallon of laundry detergent....poured it from one end of the kitchen to the other...and then took her little sister and little brother "slip n sliding" LOL
I asked her why she did that...she looked at me like I had 3 eyes, and said....because it was fun Ma. (they call me Ma)

well, unfortunently, locked up and wayyy to far up are things not understood in my family. From an early age my brother (grown now thank god and partially the reason i do not have children) was able to climb anything and unlock/break into anywhere. At 3 he climbed the FACE of the fridge got up to the cabinet above where my parents had a 'child lock' that actaully was like a hasp lock and my brother opened it with a fork, pulled out all the liquor bottles and lined them up from the tallest to the shortest on the countertop.
SO for some of us out there, there is no saftey without handcuffs and 100% supervision

had a questoin for you all. I ended up leaving about 20 gallons of the original water in when i restarted. Any idea on how long it will take???

If you have a fully cycled tank and got most of the food out, the bacteria should have the food broke down and harmless in a couple days. Once the bacteria are present, in balance, they cycle is pretty stable. BTW, my prized shubunkin were killed when my 4 year old nephew fed them a whole sleeve of saltines.

I hear you there. I have a 5 year old a 2 year old and in 9 weeks a newborn so am I a glutton for PUNISHMENT OF WHAT. Well one day my son goes dad can I feed the fish I was like ok let me help you he grabs the can of pellets and dumped them ALL IN. Luckily I still had a decent CUC left and they ate what the fish did not. Were we have issues most of the time is with his turtle tank. My 2 year old loves to take Kitty litter CLEAN THANK GOD and put it into the water. Well it plugs the filters up tighter than a DFP will eat a piece of Krill. Try having to clean a tank 3-5 times a week because of CLAY in the water.

luckily my tank is way too big for my 3yr old newphew to get to... he can't reach into it, although he loves to feed the fish and i let him sometimes... also it has a canapy on top and is heavy to open... i recommend getting a bigger tank that disables your children from getting into it..haha there is aways room for a bigger tank!! lol
