Halides and glass top.

I searched and found 1 post about this but it didnt answer my question.
I was at my LFS and while talking about lighting the kid mentioned if I was going to run metal halide lighting I would NOT want to use the glass 'tops' for the tank. That the heat could cause the glass to break.
I thought it was ok to use the lids/tops which would help with evaporation, escapees, etc...! And I had heard something about UV filtration as well although that may have been with the use of another part (specific uv filter)
Can anyone give me input on his statement... Any truth to it???
Thanks.

Todd,
The only time you will need UV protection is when using "double ended" HQI bulbs. Many pendants come with a glass UV shield. IF you are using single ended MH bulbs then you dont need to worry about UV. IF you keep the glass top on your tank your water may get too warm. You can go to your local home improvement store and pick up "eggcrate" which is a great substatute for glass. It helps keep the tank cooler, helps keep fish from jumping out and increases evaporation (which is a good thing). Also the eggcrate is fairly cheap.
Hope this helps
