I have done a bit of research on it since I got it as a hitchhiker and loved the way it looked in my tank.
Yes like most algaes it will help in removal of both nitrates and phosphates, but also sucks a lot of calcium out of your water so keep up on dosing.
It is easy to keep pruned, but like ivy, dies (turned white) and builds on top of itself - the white dead branches will eventually fall off and might create detritus. My peppermints do something with the dead pieces in the back of the tank, I think they are building some contraption![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
The new baby tips will be white also.
One thing to watch for is that it doesn't shadow your corals.
It won't ever "go sexual" or get out of control like caulerpa.
Enjoy! It adds a nice natural look to a reef or fish tank I think.
