I wouldn't worry too much about the feeding of live foods. As long as the lighting is sufficient and the coral looks good, it sould be fine.

my hammer coral hardly ever took direct feedings. The only thing I could get it to eat was mysis shrimp, and only once a month, maybe not even that often. I think they prefer to soak up the light, so make sure your lighting is sufficient, especially since it won't take direct feedings.

Hairy mushrooms are fun to watch eat. I feed mine small pieces of raw shrimp. They wrap up around the food and swallow it up. The trick is getting the food to stay there long enough before the fish come and steal it...lol

It's the same with my hammer. I've seen brine shrimp get caught and wrapped up in it but after a couple of minutes they release them. This guy just loves the light and will retreat at night.

Mine does the opposite of yours. For some reason, my hammer retreats when I turn my lights on and full extends when I have my lights off. My hammer is very odd....
Update : Moved it into an area in my tank with less direct light and it is always out.
