hammer coral reproduction?

I recently purchaced a tank raised branching green hammer coral. It has 5 large polyps, and about 20 smaller ones around the base. What i thought was unusual is there is no skeleton at all showing. The stalks are covered by an extention of the polyps (i'm guessing that it is what it is) In all of the hammer and anchor corals that i've seen the polyps emerge from the tops of the skeleton, which is exposed. Is the skeleton of this one covered because it is reproducing?? I can't seem to find any info anywhere...
