I know this may sound harsh but i need to euthinize my 5 year old hamster. He looks old with graying hair and looks like he has arthritis in his hind legs. he is having a really hard time moving around and hammy is actually my girls hamster but she wants me to help him "move on." any ideas? should i take him to a vet and get them to do it?

Absolutely!! My hammy's name was hammy too.
I think it's like 20 bucks to get a dog euthanized, so a hammy should be cheaper. Or you could even call the humane society to do it, you can avoid a doctor's office fee that way... I didn't evn like my stupid hamster, but when it died, I cried... I'm such a wuss.
I guess I was more attached than I thought.

My wife is having her 18 year old poodle put down this weekend. She has had him since she was in the 5th grade. He can barely function anymore and practically sleeps all the time. He has no quality of life. I think she is doing the right thing. It is going to be a long sad weekend for her, but maybe I can find a way to help keep her mind off of it.

There's your answer right there. If your girl is mature enough to realize that the poor lil guy is hurting and needs help it's time to do it. Any vet will put him down and it's not awful at all. They just kind of go to sleep. I think it'll help her to have the choice to go or not. I believe vets just use an overdose of an anesthetic so you can have the vet tell her, if she goes, that so that she knows it won't be painful for him. It might also help to tell her that many hamsters don't live quite as long as hers did so she did a WONDERFUL job of taking care of him!
