Hang on Back Filter in a saltwater tank

Any thoughts on using multiple HOB filters on a FOWLR tank? I was pricing sump filtration systems and I don't see it in the budget any time soon so I was thinking about using 2 HOB filters with bio-wheels. They apparently have set ups for additional media. I would greatly appreciate some feed back before I make any purchases. Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to the site.

Yes you can use the HOB filters without a problem. The bio wheels are not needed, and personally I get HOB filters without them. Your live rock and sand does the work of the bio wheel, and removing it may prevent some splash which causes salt creep. I have a 90g with two HOB C4 Fluval brand filters along with my sump (seahorses are messy eaters). That HOB filter is designed for different media. I use the same brand on my 56g as well (just 1 for that tank). They work great.

get enough live rock and you won't need any filters except for a skimmer. I have a 120 gal. which is sumpless and no filters. I have a hob skimmer.

Lol that does work. Its not cheap but it is effective. I have like 40-45 lbs in my 20 gal. The fish thrive lol I do also have a hob in there too, but the tank is prob overstock, its my old qt that is now home to a misbehaving dottyback, aswell as fish waiting to go in my new tank.

Consider building a sump from an inexpensive tank bought on sale (usually about $1.00/gallon). There are plenty of plans online, but you should go simple. The additional cost would be for an overflow and a return pump. Still probably less expensive than a gaggle of HOB's, and certainly more functional.
