Happy b-day me! Cortez Ray!

Well after some discussion and further research I'm debating returning the ray for store credit. I don't feel like I can give it the home it deserves. If anyone would be willing to trade for it locally I would be willing to do that...

thats not a cortez for sure.. its a cali ray .. my two looked just like it! i got rif of them because the y need cold water to survuive.. sure they did well in my system atre like pigs but did not strive do to the higher temps in my tank..with that said a great ray but mine were very large and as said once he grows a bit more your going to have alot of trouble with him int he reef.. cali's love to swim mid tank and "graze" over the tops of the rocks knocking all of your corals over,, also when they at night " think they are feeding" int he wild they will always blow air intot he sand to try to dig up crustaceans so he will soon start to dig holes once he is comfy in your tank which you might hate...
any other question s just let me know

Thanks for the advice. I have noticed him digging in the sand for what I assume are my nassarius snails. I'll do some research on the cali ray and see if that looks like it. I also got some more pictures last night so we'll see how they turned out.
I emailed the place I bought him from asking if I coud return him for store credit and they said they have never had a problem out of them in a reef tank. I didn't really know what to say since I've never kept a ray. I just asked if I could try him out a while and keep a close eye on him. We'll see how it goes.
I did notice he wasn't to keen on the chopped up silversides I fed him last night...

This might be a better pic but I do agree with you on the Cali round ray. That's got to be what this guy is. I definitely can't keep him now.

Good news everyone, the store I bought the ray from has agreed to take it back. I'm going to return it Saturday and pick up some corals with the store credit.
I think it says a lot about the store to take it back. By doing this though they are going to gain a loyal cutomer who is likely to spend much more money there.
I'm really going to miss this guy though becasue he has lots of personality and he's adjusted really well.
Thanks for the input on this guys. I would much rather have had this advice and be able to correct the situation before something bad happens... :happyfish

honestly not only do i respect you for doig this , but i beleive you are the first person i personaly have ever seen that has made a mistake with a shark/ ray and actually did the right thing and is taking him back because you know you dont have all the proper requirements for him...
and beleive me if you value your corals this is a good choice since i had two(and they get very large) and they loved to playa round in the tank!!
he is also def. a cali ray.. the diffierence between a cortez and cali ray is HUGE , not only the major different in coloration but also the vastly diferent body shape as well

Moreso, it says a lot about you for making a decision based on the ANIMALS needs, and not YOUR needs. Good for you. The hobby needs more people like yourself.

Post some pictures of the corals you pick up.

Thanks for the comments guys, it means a lot to me. I'm just happy the store owner decided to take it back. I don't know what I would have done if he would have treated me like the LFS' usually do.
The store I got it from had some awesome ricodias so maybe it's time to pick up a few of those...

Oreo,
no, I refuse to shop there anymore. Come to the IRC meeting next weekend at Jay's house and I'll turn you on to a few stores. I promise you'll never shop at a local fish store again!

Oreo, too bad you can't make a Sunday meeting...

You should check out Premium Aquatics in Beech Grove and Extreme Aquarium up in Zionsville. They're much closer for us and I promise you'll never go to a LFS for livestock/coral again!

Premium Aquatics in Beech Grove I go there a lot but they don't have any fish right now. I think Louisville is closer than zionsville but it could just be the drive up there. I buy dry goods from Premium Aquatics in Beech Grove and my friend big al. I would have liked to have met you but maybe someday down the road we will met up somewhere.

Oreo, you're just in taylorsville aren't you? My parents live out there so maybe I can sneak by sometime...
I'm planning on having the monthly IRC meeting at my house soon and when I do I might see if a saturday night would work.
