My buddy got stung by one at the LFS where I eventually got my first Volitan. He was attempting to "hand feed" the puffer in the same tank, when the lion came so close the spines were out of the water. ...His hand swelled up, had red marks all over his hand and forearm, and cried and whined like a little girl for a few days. (Not hours, days.) He said the worst part of the whole thing was that it lasted so long, and was such an intense pain that even high doses of over-the-counter pain killers couldnt get it off his mind.
Great way to screw up your day/week. Two tips I haven't seen mentioned yet: I use a mag-float for cleaning glass, and only hand clean once a month or so. I also always feed the lion first, and on the far right side of my tank, whilst others are fed on the other side. Anytime my hand is in the tank, I have a spotter...girlfriend, etc and just say "if he gets past right here, tell me".
Using above tactics I've never even had a close call, except feeding him once, where the spines do come out of the water. (Thankfully I learned that lesson at my bud's expense)
Hope this helps. Great fish- often found swimming upside-down, backwards, vertically....its really amazing, and these fish are truly exceptional pets.
