Has anyone ever had Fruit Flies?

The fruit fly can be pesky to rid of. We tend to have cycles of this critter and other than general cleanliness(sp), we haven't really found a sure fire way to get rid of them.
We seem to get them in spring and fall. Keeping the drains and waste clean seem to help the most.

Ilene, how did you ever get rid of these stupid things??????????????????
I have them now.

I remembered seeing a thread about it on here awhile ago so I looked it up.
My friend has them also, they're even in her fridge.

bleach. bleach down the drains, bleach in the bottoms of cups lined with syrup, bleach wipes to clean every surface in your home including the floors, the inside of your fridge, and the insides of your garbage cans.
bleach bleach bleach and keep everything spotless. they'll be gone in 2 weeks.

sorry to disagree with some people but fruit flys are mainly drawn by water and wet wood and of course the drains and such as mentioned. Getting anything wet all dryed up will leave them with no where to reproduce the bleach will help them get rid of the drains though aswell.
Check under the kitchen sink and bathroom sinks for any dampness *I know sep* also check dampness around water bowls and food dishes. Check under the house for any acumulated water aswell.
Plus the normal stuff of keeping food up and all that good stuff.
If you see alot of them and want to kill what you can another good way is dawn in spray bottle and spray the heck out of where they are.
we battled them in my resteraunt for months and found a tiny water leak under the coke machine got it all dried out and spray an insectiside and they were all gone.

they lay eggs in drain... you'll have to pour something down there....
also try opening a bottle of white vinegar.. pour 1/5 or so out... and sit it by the sink
that insect stick tape stuff works also.

Fruit flies lay eggs on fruit, drain flies are something different. Ask me how I know. There are also meal moths that I got infested with, you can accidentally bring them into your house with a bag of flour and they are almost impossible to get rid of. I have an exterminator come 4 times a year and I still get them.

Kelli, they were a pain in the butt for several weeks. I poured bleach in the drains, kept the garbage empty and killed every one that I could. I stood by the counter some nights with a tissue and squashed every one that landed. I put out vinegar, that didn't do too much. Some flew in, but not many. They just sort of diminished and then it got cold out. They were gone by then. Luckily I did not have an issue this year.

There wasn't much that could be done about dampness near the water bowl. Julie runs and slides into it which slops the water out of the bowl. I didn't check under the porch for dampness, but that is entirely possible. It is all dirt under there and I have woods all around.
Hi Mike, I know you too

I raise flightless D. hydei for my poison dart frogs... I love fruitflies, the cheap way to feed them! I keep my infestations inside 32oz cups though...

yeah there are actually 2 different ones that are both commonly called fruit flys but neither of which I want.
we have a problem with normal flyes right now about this time of year they start to harvest and burn the feilds so they swarm away from it. we have literally thousands of them in the yard right now that try to come in when the door opens. I know they serve a purpose but I could really do without them.
