Has anyone ever read the children's book The Best Christmas Pageant Ever?

My son, who is in fourth grade, came home and said they read this book in class and that it talks about kids burning down someone's house, picking on fat kids, and --- and underwear. WTF??? Is he exaggerating? I did find the "--- and underwear" quote on amazon.

:scared: :scared: I already spoke to her about it and she said it's always been well received and she's never had any complaints before. This is a public school too and doesn't this book talk about God and Jesus?

I remember reading this book in the 3rd grade. It's still widely used in elementary curricula. I wouldn't worry too much about it. The basic point is that the children come from a not so great background, but through the course of putting on a Christmas pageant for school they learn the true meaning of Christmas and family.
I would assume that your child's teacher will address any questionable language or inferences in the book. If I remember correctly, the only swear word they use is "hell" and it's only once. I think far more good comes from reading this book than blacklisting it.

Yeah, believe it or not we preformed that play in church when I was in fifth grade. I don't know if it was right from the book, so it may have been a little edited. I do remember there being some subject matter that wasn't exactly suitable for church, but I don't recall it being too bad.

OMFG !!! I just can't believe someone is making a big deal over that book ! For your information and BEFORE you flame me on this, I am a media specialist for BOCES in the Media library (15 years) and we have a very large multiple book collection (over 100,000 book copies) that we distribute to schools. We also have other types of media resources (videos, DVDs, kits, CD-ROM, etc ...) for educational uses for schools as well. One of the books is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This book is wildly popular with elementary school teachers and kids love it. It is a very funny book to read. We also have The Best School Year Ever as well by the same author and just as wildly popular with teachers and children alike. So - don't take it too personally nor complain to the teachers as well. These books are and MEET school curriculum standards. And NO it's not about God or Jesus.
Read the book yourself before jumping to conclusions with other parents and your school district. You might just actually enjoy it yourself and laugh !
It's a shame parents hear what their children read and they tend to over-exaggerate what the book is about.

I think you're the one jumping to conclusions here. She came to somewhere she trusted to get information on something she was legitimately concerned about for her child. I'd call that responsible parenting, not making a big deal out of nothing. I find it odd that you started your post with "OMFG!" and are jumping on someone else for overreacting.

I have obtained a copy of the book, and no, I don't think my 9 year old son needs to read about kids cussing out their teachers, burning down someone's shed, and reading the quotes "Those Herdman kids will go to Hell" and "All those Herdman kids think about is --- and underwear" (pages 65 and 69). It's a shame you jumped to conclusions and judged me before you knew what you were talking about.

Well said. Thank you.
