Haha. I used to have a belly button piercing. Through the skin, not the "meat" and in 2 years time it had worked itself all the way out. You can't tell now cause it's been a while, but the ring got closer and closer to the edge til it just... Came out.
And never any infections or anything.
did it leave a weird scar? im totally not down with that. lol. ive been thinking about letting it close and then getting it redone, because i got it done professionally but it is really noticeably crooked... but if its just gonna come out itself and not look too awful weird then ill just let it do that. lol.
demartini, i read a while ago in another thread where you mentioned doing that....
ZOMG! ive done that too but thank god ive never ripped it but it still feels like
omg! lol. i can only imagine.

That happened to my belly button piercing and then I accidentally ripped it out with a bath towel.

I bet that was loud.

Alix , What your describing is very common with navel rings . A close friend of mine pierced in a shop and another friend tattoos . I have spent a lot of time just hanging around shops . I have seen many young ladies have it redone simply because its "pushing out" . Basically its a forging object and your body will try to push it out . If its not Stainless Steal it will pose more of a rejection factor . Also if its a larger gauge ring or a designer ring with a charm on it that will cause it to grow out faster ,As it will weigh a little more . I had my eyebrow done and redone and redone again. Simple because it was a curved barbell and the extra weight of the extra ball would weigh down and it would start to push out .

El Guapo is right. The most common piercing to grow out is the naval piercing. They all push out a little so it depends on who shallow it was pierced. This is a common problem with the hood piercing as well. How long has it been pierced?
