I have a beautiful 150 Fish only set up and between the different types of fish for some reason no matter what I do I cannot get a Powder blue to live past 10 days :notsure:
The latest one showed signs of ick so I lowered the levels to 1.009 this weekend. I know these guys are extra sensitive to any changes so maybe that is the reason but what about the other powder blues ...
I have 3 other tangs a Naso, a Lopezi (sp?) tang and a Purple tang and they are happy as can be for many months now.
BTW the Naso has ick also but is still doing well and I anticipate with the hypo slainity he will be ick free
Also my angels are doing well also ...
I am just about to give up on Powder blues ..
My levels are good and I am nuts when it comes to taking care of my tank though I don't like my turbo twust UV sterilizer ... It definitely has not helped prevent the spread of ick

UVs helping with ich is one of the most overrated things in this hobby. Personally, I don't believe in them and won't waste the money on one.
As for your tang, how long did you acclimate it and how quickly did you drop the SG to 1.009?

I doubt you will ever be able to add a Powder Blue to an established 150 gallon tank that already has too many Tangs present. If you had a larger (longer) tank and/or no other Tangs then you'd have a fairly good chance of success.

How long are you thinking I need ? Currently I am at 6 feet long ...
Also in general though has anyone had success with the Powder blues ?
Even when i go to the aquairums it is not unusually to see large purple tangs and large Naso's but I never see a large Powder blue ... my point being that some of the tangs seem to live much longer in captivity.

What pump are you using on the UV?? You should have a real Small one, that basically dribbles the water out....
Also how are you acclimating the fish? and for how long?

Acclimating ?? What is that ? JUST KIDDING !!!
I usually acclimate the fish for 1 to 2 hours with the drip method depending on what the water from the LPS is compared to mine. I test the salinity and temp before the acclimation to see how far off they are and then I test it every 20 minutes during the acclimation.
AS far as the UV pump I am using the recommended pump from turbo twist, I forgot the GPH and am in my office now so I can't check but I bought it specifically due to the recommendations of the UV's manufacturer.

IMO a Powder Blue can do OK in a 6 foot tank but only if it's the only large fish in the tank.

what? 1.01?
As far as my other question, how quickly did you drop the SG on him when you did the hypo?

I keep my salinity at 1.01 at all times.
I'm guessing a number accidently got left off the end of that
Even my freshwater livebearer tanks are kept higher than 1.001!

Maybe not ... he had written 1.01 which is also 1.010 not 1.001

I dropped from 1.018 to 1.014
24 hrs later dropped to 1.011
24 hrs later to 1.008 (actually I now need to raise it a drop to 1.009)

You can't keep saltwater fish at 1.010 either though. That is where I have kept my brackish tanks. He must have meant to say 1.021 (I hope..)

Are you sure your reading things correctly? :notsure:

1st Powdered Blue died after 3 weeks in the 90g
2nd PB died after 6 weeks in the 180g
3rd died after 3 weeks after going from the 180g to the 300g
4th and probably last PB is still alive after 4 months
in the 300g (1st tang introduced) Tank set up:
300g/MT...200g/Sump/refg
6ft UV
chiller
salinity: 1.023
no sign of ick yet

Yeah I know but I'm trying to be an optimist here and believe that it meant to say 1.019 or something like that
That'd be a heck of a lot better than 1.010 much less 1.001!!! :scared:

I use a digital Salinity that I made sure is calibrated.
Why .. do the numbers look strange ?
