I think they are part of the grouper family, so just be careful as it gets bigger having it around smaller fish

yes they are part of the grouper family, they grow to a size of about 8", and i believe you need to worry about small shrimp more than small fish, but mine has not eat anything beside what i have giving it, my coral banded shrimp (1 1/2") shares a cave with it. I also have a couple cleaner shrimp that were about 3/4" when i got them with no problems. I just make sure he gets plenty to eat.

No. Marine Betta's (aka, preferred name of Comets) are in the family Plesiopidae. Not directly related to groupers at all. A tang or wrasse, would be equally related to a grouper as a Comet. They are usually the only species you'll see in the hobby of that family, other then occasionally Blue Devils (Paraplesiops poweri
).
Yea, sometimes they are finicky to get eating, and only take ghost shrimp for a bit. Their peacefulness is their downfall, aggressive or bothersome tankmates should be avoided. They are quite cryptic and usually stick to their cave, only coming out during feeding. Small fish are typically fine, and ornamental shrimp, should be okay as well.
