I've heard so many conflicting reports on mangroves it's not funny. Some places say they noticed a dramatic decrease in the amount of crap the skimmer was pulling out. Others say mangroves work to slowly to provide any noticable change. Larger more mature mangroves will pull out more "stuff" out of the water then smaller ones, yet that's about the only thing all the sources i looked through have in common.

Well, I have no exp with mangroves but from what I've read they basically do a pretty good job of finishing up the nitrogen cycle, even to the point that the skimmer will stop producing skimmate due the water cleaning qualities of the mangroves. I have also, heard, however, that they can make water a bit yellowish, which stands to reason as these are plant, not algae, so they need to be considered as plants. [They are also freshwater plants, BTW, that need to be accilmated for marine aquarium use.]

I have heard that Magnesium depletion is one of the undesirable side effects of Mangrove filtration. Evidently, they use Magnesium as part of their biological processes, to pass salt out through their leaves. I believe that this has something to do with them being freshwater plants. To counter this, you'll need to perform water changes or, perhaps, find a good Magnesium supplement. I imagine this might also require the use of yet another test kit.
Meanwhile, I'm still gining the Caulerpa thing a shot. My green-thumbed fiancee, however, has expressed some interest in having a Mangrove or two in the living room. Keep us updated...
