Hello
the first night i got my white cheek moray, he discovered the return pipe and decided to go down it and land in the sump then jump out and lay on the bottom of the stand.
My LFS told me to put a filter bag over the end of the pipe and rig it the best i can.
it's been almost 1 1/2 months with the filter bag over the pipe and idk if he goes near it.
ive noticed that the bag blocks alot of the flow coming back into the tank so i was just wondering if it is safe to take the bag off or if so, will he try and go back down it?

why not put a bit of wire mesh around the return pipe? shouldn't slow the flow and would solve your problem. I wouldn't trust the eel not to do it again.

Ok I am a little confused how it swam down the return pipe that should have water presure in it and then made it past the pump at the bottom of the return pipe ?
There should really be no way for it to make it past the pump. Unless your talkin about the drain pipe ? In which case you should have some kind of prefilter over that anyways . Pictures are worth a thousand words .

I would not use wire mesh . Metal + saltwater = rust . There are other options but I couldn't realy say which to use unless I can see your set up

In my sump i have a pump which pushes water back into the tank which i guess is the return but there is no other way for him to get back there unless he went through the return, he can't fit through the little slits

i think i figured it out.

Between my glass lid and the black overflow box thing, there is like an inch and a 1/2 of space and i dont have a sponge on the top of the pipe that brings my water to the sump. so im thinking he wiggled his way between the glass and black thing.
it is impossible for him to have gone down the return because there is to much pressure and he would have gotten killed in the pump.
does that sound more reasonable?

Eels are known escape artists . Not as much so as an octo but you still need to make sure cracks and holes are covered .

so do u think it is safe to take the filter bag off the return?
and what do you recommend to fill in the gap between the glass and the over flow box?
since i never realized that gap and he hasn't done it again, do i need to worry about it?

It is always a possibility. I had an open tank with about 4 inches between the water level and the lip, I didn't think the snowflake would jump that far and he did.

is your tank reef ready ? or does it have the hang on back overflows ?
You can purchase a foam prefilter at the pet store that should cover the pipe that drains into the sump . if not you might need to get creative with some styrofoam or a luffa scrubber or even a small section of fiberglass mesh screen .

just get some prefilter sponges from the lfs they should be able to get you the right equipment . if not you can certanly find it online with a little looking .

its ben a while sinse I had to deal with overflows however have you concidered maybe modifying your piping with drilled pvc to keep the flow with giving access out.just a thought

i have no idea what that means

but if you would please explain i will deffinetly take it into consideration

Lions den if you can get us a picture there are a few people here than can walk you through what to do to modify your plumbing so that it is eel proof .
