I am going to get a 125gal tank with all the stuff he had when he had the tank up as a reef tank. My question is the tank sit for about 2 years now and he has sand and was LR that I will be getting to. Do I need to do anything special to the sand and LR besides just cycling the tank? I have a 90gal reef now and thinking on keep in them both up making one for sps and one for leathers and soft corals since my 90 has been taking over my mushrooms. Any help and advice would be nice. Thanks

I had a similar case with my tank that sat for two years. I am lucky and have a friend with a 15,000 gallon sysem and he cured my rock for me but I would definetly not re-use the same sand.

What might be the problem of re-using that sand???

Mine smelled really really bad. I would just think that there would be a lot of trapped detritus and it could cause a cycle to take a lot longer or it coupld just be a trite factory....who knows I could be wrong. Mine just smelled horrible.

Where was the set up at? I mean if it was in an enclosed area covered it may not have a bunch of foreign matter in it, so i think you could just rinse it out really well. But if it was out in the garage or something, with the top wide open it may have a bunch of junk in it. Just seems like a waste to throw it all away to buy new.money could be spent elsewhere on a 125

I asked you that because, I had the tank once "turned off" for a year. When I returned the tank was empty (beacuse of evaporation). When I started the tank again I re-use ALL of my sand & rocks. The only thing is that I let it ALL clean & covered, and BTW, there was NO odor at all.
