Have we cycled yet?

My tank was started under unusual circumstances, so I'm not sure where in the process we are. The whole 250 gallon FOWLR shebang was set up in less than a week by a professional fish guy as part of a TV Home Remodeling show. It has been full of fish since day 3. We are now in week 7.
But, here's what I think he did (remember I'm a newby.) The tank was filled with sterilized NSW, LR, and CC, and down in the 60 gallon sump there's a skimmer, two prefilter bags (catching what drains from the two sides of the tank) and some sort of substrate filter (has sand in it?). Then there's the mechanical filter and the chemical filter. Then he's got a bag of charcoal, and a two big pieces of rolled up filter-like stuff with bacteria from another client's sump, and those little plastic balls, also from a client. BTW, I was told it was $5000 worth of equipment (free to me). He also used Cycle. Over the first two weeks, he did two water changes, and came every couple days to keep watch. He called daily for the first week.
Of the fish we started with, our losses were one lyretail wrasse (suddenly and without sign of illness or other explanation--the fish guy came that day and tested the water) about 10 days in, and we went from 25 blue chromis to 8. However, the chromis disappeared one at a time over the first 4 weeks, and I only saw 2 bodies. We think the wrasse ate some of them. The rest of the tank consists of:
1 panther grouper 5"
1 clown trigger 4"
1 purple tang
5 yellow tangs
1 flame angel
1 flame hawkfish
1 long-nose butterfly
The huge bloom of brown algae never came, IMO. I see a light layer on the LR and some did get on the tank, but nothing shocking. I have no red or green algae. The fish guy, meanwhile, is very pleased with the health and vigor he sees in the fish, the colors developing on the LR, and the clarity of the water. My own tests with a 5-in-1 dipstick (is this any good?) show nitrates 40, nitrites 0, alkalinity 300, and pH 8.4.
Has the tank cycled?

Well, from what I can tell your tank has cycled, but did he add all those fish at once. I can't believe they have all lived. IMO, I think your panther grouper ate the chromis, maybe not, but they have been known to eat small fish. Also, you have five yellow tangs together, and they aren't fighting, wow. I am also still new to this but I have done a lot research and coming here also helps. Research yourself and try to keep the fish alive. I am so jealous that you got a huge tank for free, if I was only so lucky.:p

It will be on Monday Nov. 17th, at 8PM and 11PM, on Discovery, Monster House.
The yellow tangs to chase each other around a bit, but they also school together.
The fish guy added the chromis first, and two days later added all the rest, plus several more biggies. A couple days later, I asked him to take the biggies away (I'm sorry, the only one I can name is the Emporer Angel) because I was freaked out by the cost of feeding big, hungry, delicate fish, and paying someone $75 a week to see that I didn't kill them. I was told we started with $2000 in fish! We also had a porcupine puffer, but I asked that he also go to a different home, because he stayed with us for 10 days without eating a bite and I was afraid for him. I'm happy to say the fish guy is pleased enough with my progress to trust me with twice-monthly visits now.
As for the panther grouper, I've never seen him act aggressively toward other fish. He mostly stays in his cave until he sees me with krill in my hand. Although . . . the chromis tend to stay on the opposite side of the tank from the grouper's cave.

I love that show, will watch for sure.
I agree it sounds like its through the cycle, the bio-balls and other medium from an established tank I am guessing had enough bacteria in it to keep from a true cycle. But man what a way to get into the hobby.
Good luck with it

Wow wish i had that setup. soundslike things are doing fine. Did he set up any refugium or any plant life of any kind?

No refugium that I am aware of, and no plants. The original set up was all about flash, for TV. It was packed full of fish and brightly colored rubber corals and fake plants. For the sake of maintenance, we toned it down considerably both fish-wise and decoration-wise afterwards. The irony of getting that tank for free is that most people who have one on that scale either serious hobbyists, or they don't care what it costs to have someone come it and care for it every week. We fit neither category yet!
PS--I've id'd one more fish that we sent away: a big (7"?) naso tang. Another one I can't find pics of anywhere--he was shaped like a clown fish, but huge at about 5", orange, with vertical white stripes and blue teeth. The fish guy was really excited to have gotten it straight from Australia. Any guesses?

Wow the angel and the naso are the two fish that I really want. Now I am jealous. Are the fish in the tank when they filmed the show?

I watched the show last night, wow they spent a ton of time on that deck. Was that the 1 st time you had seen the show? I wish they had shown more of the completed tank. But most of us here would like a few hours gazing at it. Good luck with the tank, and congrats on the remodling it looks really neat, I have 2 boys and they totally went nuts when they saw the periscope.
I tried to attached the pic from the website, for those that missed the show and heres the address http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mo.../undersea.html

Looks like you will need to become a serious hobbyist as you have a built in so you can't exactly decide that you don't want it if the maintanence fees are too much. You will learn very quickly to maintain it yourself for a lot less money. I would get a couple good saltwater books if you have not already. Maybe you could get the kids involved in the hobby and make it a learning experience. Good luck. I hope you learn to enjoy your new hobby! Lesley
