they are ok for very stable water depths. since the performance is greatly affected by that. you need to keep the water level at the mark on the column going above or below the mark significantly changes the performance. There is little nothing in the way of adjusting the skimmer for wet or dry skim other than changing the water level (it has an air intake adjustment that you can use but I find its not a great adjustment). its not the most efficient skimmer. but its better than nothing. there are about a dozen skimmers I would choose over this one. but if it is what you can fit into your budget it will work. IME skimping on the price of a skimmer usually leads to spending more when you decide you want one that works well and is easy to adjust and maintain.

Thanks for the reply. I'll wait for something else to come up. I'm in no rush to start my tank. One piece at a time so I'll hold of on this skimmer.
Thanks

Anytime.
Protien skimmers are one of those pieces of equipment that you may not absolutely need but if your going to get one getting the best you possibly can is never a bad idea. you can make just about any hunk work but some aren't worth the trouble for what you get out of them. I've even built my own out of soda bottles and lime wood air-blocks before, they worked not spectacularly but they did work. I have had one that were so impossible to tune in accurately that I gave up after a week.
