If you get a hawkfish you should plan on having at least a semi-aggressive tank. You wont be able to have hermits, crabs, or shrimp.
One fish that would work with those fish and that's pretty cool is a sixline wrasse. Lotsa character for a little fish. pretty too.

The only Hawkfish I've seen that seems to be peaceful enough for a community reef tank is the Falco Hawkfish.

i have a longnose hawkfish that had no problems with the shrimp. i have a coral beauty as well with no problems there. i know flame hawks are a definite no-no. as far as aggressiveness, i have a yellow wrasse that is more aggressive when the food is in the tank then anyone else. sans food, none are threatening in the least.

They are hit and miss...kinda like dwarf angels in a reef.

In my reading on another website it says they are peaceful with other fish except their own kind and smaller fish than themselves.
I also read you can't house shrimp, crabs and snails - unless of course you want to give it a highly overpaid meal.

A lfs sold me a flame hawk, along with a large clean up creww of hermits, 4 shrimp and 2 emerald crabs
He hasn't touched anything! Might be because i feed him homemade food, lots of meaty stuff, like shrimp, scallops etc. I have had him afew months so i guess i have been lucky

I think the thing to consider is the size of the fish versus the size of the shrimp. I have a small longnose hawk in with two cleaners and a peppermint shrimp. The cleaners are bigger than him and the pep is the same size. He doesn't bother anyone. He is almost the smallest fish in the tank, though, so if he gets bigger, I may have to kick him out.

That's the problem; most hawkfish do get bigger, and good luck catching them in a reef tank.
