I put a piece of polyfilter in my sump that the water is forced to go through.... I only left it in there for a couple of days. It really did a great job of catching and cleaning up a lot of the garage that was floating around.

yeah, I'm thinking about just buying some carbon and floss rather than buying a new media cartridge

I had this problem with my 55g. Cut back on the food . I also decreased time between replacing the media and cleaning in my canister filter to once a month.

Yeah, I'm new at this hobby so I think my problem is overall maintenance. I just bought some media floss and activated carbon to put in the penguin. I'm going to start doing water changes every 2 weeks along w/ carbon and floss. hopefully I can get better results by trail and error...thanks for the replies;)

Did you just set this tank up with the fresh fine aragonite? I set my tank up with said sand and it was cloudy for the first 2 weeks. It will clear up in time. I won't set my tank up in the future though with this sand. It blows around to easily even after 7 months....

nah, I have just a little crushed coral. I rinsed it out before I put it in the tank. It is great I have no worries about stirring it up cuz I changed my Live rocks around a bunch and it would stir up justa little but then be fine 10 mins later. I did southdown thing already and found that was superficial and I didn't really need or want it. I was going to go bare bottom but then I didn't like the look of it and decided just put enough CC on the bottom just for the look. It's great. Having the sand was just too much and to me was very annoying. I love my decision just to have an extremely little aragonite.

s14joe,
Running carbon is primarily for ammonia/toxin removal in your tank. Once your bacteria colony has been established as well as a healthy lr/ls setup...carbon is pointless. Carbon is good to use when you have an ammonia spike from accidental excess food waste, overstocking, die-off etc. Then running carbon will help neutralize the ammonia spike. Using good quality carbon (like marineland's black diamond) can get costly since it's only good for about 3 weeks of use. Bear in mind that using carbon during a tank cycle will slow the cycle down, you want your ammonia spike to peak first, then start the ammonia to nitrite conversion.
Others may have a better explanation, hopefully this gives you a general idea.
