Healthy gills help.....

I was wondering.... what is the healthy gill beat for marine fish? and do all species of marine fish breathe at the same rate or does it differ?
Also, what color should healthy gills be?
Lastly, can stress or medications cause an increased gill beat?

Yes, stress of any kind can cause rapid gilling. Environmental stress, illness, etc. Basically, you should really notice the gills much if they are healthy. If there is a problem, you may see rapid gilling, red, swollen gills, even gills that are ragged around the exterior plates.

what about slow breathing? My red fire gobbies breath so much slower than all the rest of my fish is something wrong with them, or do gobbies breathe slower than other species?

Fish all breath at different rates. Gilling will speed up and slow down just by environmental stimulus. Watch for rapid gilling, loss of appetite, water parameter changes, those are things to look for. Fish gill differently just like we breath differently depending on what we are doing.
