Heat Pump

My central AC went out and I was thinking about replacing it with a heat pump. Are heat pumps really that good or is the electric company just wanting more money?
Do they cool the house as well as an air conditioner? I do not know anyone that has one and was hoping that someone here has one.
Thanks Katz

I know that 20 some odd years ago a heatpump would cool but not as good as AC and the same goes for heating. I imagine the new versions do a lot better job. If you are near the coast one would probably work great because you don't tend to get the extreme tempatures. The save power because all you have is a fan and a circulation pump to heat or cool air.

Heat pumps are fine. I live in Florida and it was 100 degrees today and my house is cool. Now I keep my house around 78 degrees. If you wanted it in the 60's you may have a problem. Most everyone here has heat pumps.
In the winter, they only work efficiently down to around 40 degrees. Once it get's too cold, you need a heat strip to take over.
Not bad on electricity either for the most part. I have three heat pumps. A 5 ton for my main floor, a 3 ton for my second floor and a specialized heat pump that heats my pool.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will go with AC because the gas company will not add a new line for free if I go with a heat pump.
We also average in the lower thirties in the winter, so I don't see the savings of having a heat pump.

You are probably right. I've always been in Florida and they are popular here, but I'm sure they would be the best choice up there.

i know this is an older thread but ALOT of electric companies will finance a new heatpump system. i did that with mine. got a Trane XL15i and a furnace. my loan was setup with no payments for 6 months, no compound interest, and pay off as fast as you want.
i cant say enough how much i LOVE my heatpump. i live in missouri, temps range fro -40 to 100+. during the peak summer months my house never left 72-74 degress (depends on what setting i had it on), and in the winter i had the heatpump set to shutoff at 40 before gas would kick in. even at 40 degrees i could set my thermostat to 75 and it would stay there.
my gas bill dropped 150 dollars during the winter and my electric dropped about 100 during the summer. completely paid for the loan itself.

Ditto that. MoPub even offered a discount if you would go all electric. We saved thousands of dollars in just a couple years by switching to a heat pump and swapping out the water heater for an electric model.
sminker, where in Missouri?

Independence?
Raytown?
Blue springs?
I grew up in Independence, my wife in Raytown. We own a couple vacant properties in Independence and still have family back there. We're driving back for Thanksgiving.
Interested in buying a vacant lot? We have 2 for $5,500 each near Sugar Creek. They are actually 2 lots each across the street from one another. (75ft x 105ft) TAX FREE FOR 10 YEARS IF YOU PUT A HOME ON THEM! I have details from the City of Independence on this tax abatement if you're interested.
