You should be OK. It kind of depends on how cold it gets in your area at night. As a matter of fact right now I am treating my DT for cyano and so I have the pump for the sump off. My heater is in my sump. Tomorrow you will want to get a heater (obviously) and heat the water up slowly!!!

yes!. ok thanks. that was my plan. i live in california so it shouldnt be much of a problem. should i run my lights to keep temp up?

only do that if it becomes a problem (like dropping below 75) but chances are that your room is warmer than that so i think you sshould be ok... gotta love california

I've had reefs have heater failures and get down into the 60s without any harm. You'll be fine.
Consider buying two heaters roughly half the size of the one you are replacing. That way if one fails in the future it will help keep things stable until you get the failed one replaced.

I had that happen once. Brand new (cheap) glass heater. Was on for a couple of hours. Right in front of my eyes...it started filling with water and sparking. I stuck my hand in the tank to get it out (not smart...I know). But, everybody survived just fine.
