Heater in Overflow ?????

I have had one in the overflow and in the sump. I only recently had some swings in temp since it is cooling down a little. Just a pain to keep it at 83 but when the MH is on that is what the temp goes to. I have the back left side of my tank sectioned off with a wier and had it drilled. I keep a pvc pipe in there all the way to the top so i don't have the trickle. I decided to try the heater in there to hide it and havn't experienced any problems yet. There really isn't that high of flow there though. I don't know off the top of my head what i'm turing over thru the sump. Can see that the contact time with the air in the plumbing could cause the water to cool off thus making the heater work more but the heater in the sump helps that out and the water is going to cool flowing throught the plumbing anyway if it is contact with cooler air regardless of where the heater is.

so there ya go- to sum it all up1- you could do it if the heater stays under water
2- High flow would heat a lot
of water slower

3- Low flow would heat a little
water quickly

4- Flowrates do not mater over the heater-(as long as there is some to spread the heat aroung the tank)
