I was thinking about getting a heater and was wondering what kind I should get for a 37 gal. and what to keep it at.

You don't have a heater at all right now? How do you heat your tank? What temp. is it now? That is what temp you should set it at, considering you have it at a proper level now.
Personally, I like titanum submersible heaters.

I've had my tank for over a year, I was told by the guy at the LFS that I didn't need one since it doesn't get too cold in Florida.

I don't have a thermometer in there either but, the temp must stay stable cause I haven't had anything to detrimental happen to the tank. I'm looking into getting both though.

I live in South Dakota where it gets INSANELY cold, and I don't have a heater for my tank. I have a really good lighting system which makes up for most of that, but at night I shut it off and it doesn't create a problem. My advice would be to get a thermometer first to see where it actually is. I was really surprised that mine stays right around 75 degrees which is a descent temperature. I know people with bigger tanks then mine (I have a 75 gallon) in my same area that have even invested in tank COOLERS because their's get so warm with the lighting. We both have reef systems though, and this is another thing you need to consider with your temperature.
