Can anyone recommend a heater for a 55gal. tank? It will eventually become a reef.

50w is good for 50g, but 55g shouldn't present a problem.
probably need one for the winter and for stablization.

I'm a little surprised at the low wattage you suggest. The catalogs recommend a 300W for a 55gal.?

Ive got a 46 gallon anf if i remember my heater is 200w. IMO a heater is a necessity to maintain proper temps with no more than 2 degree changes.

you need heaters too!!! I was going to get a vho light set-up and thought that was it. Are these heaters expensive? I got a 29 gallon tank so what wattage will I need and also what price can I except paying?

Heaters aren't that expensive. You should be able to get one for your 29g tank for well under $50, depending on the brand. I've had luck with Hagen submersibles, which was in the $30s. I recently got a Won Bro titanium for $40 something.
