In the past I always put water in 1 gallon jugs and let them sit in hot water in my sink. It always reached its temp within 10-15 minutes.
Well I decided to get a heater and put it into the container holding the 5 gallons of water and heat it all at once. Its been over an hour and Im only at 60*!!!!!!!! Original temp when I started was 50* (150watt)

Heaters arn't designed to increase temperature, they are designed to maintain temperature. There is a huge difference. As such, they are made to slowly increase the temperature a few degrees if necessary; because if it jumps up too quickly it can stress the inhabitants of the tank.
I would have bought a large heated blanket, sat the jugs on top of it and wrapped them in it.

YES it takes a long time...I am currently heating 25g (at home) while I am here at work...talking to all you guys...

yeap heaters r only meant to heat up tanks when temps drop 1-2 degrees it will take a while until a heater can bring up your temp 30 degrees, their only meant for minor drops in temp.

Do you have something circulating the water? If not, it probably would take a long time to heat it. I mix 35 gallons at a time in a trash can and it heats up in an hour or two, but I also use a 1300 gph pump to circulate (the pump itself puts off some heat). It also helps if you close the top of your container.

I have a 700gph mag pump...and I have a lid on the container...and the heater is actually for a 55g tank.....

Are you saying yours does not heat up quickly despite all this? If so...guess all I can conclude is my pump puts off way more heat than my heater
...think the heater is only 100 watts...

NO..I actually never said that it takes a long time...I said it is aerating in a trash can with a heater while I am at work...LOL...I set the heater at a certain temp, and I really don't know how long it takes cause I mix the water the day before, and it is ready when I need it.

Gotcha

I just use a cheap 200W heater. The key is to keep the water in motion so it all gets a chance to mix instead of one hot spot.
