Mantis Shrimp! lol
Lives in my 20 gal aquarium w/ about inch of sand and 15lbs LR.
Interesting creature.:D
Wonder how long the critter could live outta water should it escape? My toes kina tingle when I walk in the room. (actually... lid is on tight and taped! lol.) Don't know if it's a smasher or a thrasher.

You wasted your money. If you posted here, a lot of people would be happy to send you theirs that they trapped....free, just to get rid of them...
Does it have spikes on the claws? Or do they look like clubs? That's how to tell which you have.
I hope you have some thick glass on that tank. If it's a clubber, you may find some nice cracks after a while....heh heh...

Hmmm didn't notice spikes... though it never leaves the rock... so I don't see it well. Guess a smasher. It was only 10 bucks... probably what it would cost to have someone ship me theirs.
Anyone have a species only mantis shrimp tank? What's your experience? I hear they *can* break glass... but not that they all *do* break it. I do hear tapping. LFS will take 'em back if I have problems. My 20 gal is just an "extra" tank. It is glass though.

They don't all break glass...just like they all don't break thumbs either, but that stigma follows them around...I was just giving you a hard time. However, what they DO do, is kill other things in your tank, so be real careful about what you are keeping with them.
Primarily known as a menace...one that is eluding me as we speak...lurking....somewhere...in my tank...laughing at me...

lol. Sorry to hear that. Noooo I would not have one in my display tank. "Cuddles" is in his own tank with no other live creatures except pods and worms. There were a coupl-a small clams... but they are no more. I did do some research before buying one. The only downside is that the 20 is a glass aquarium.
Good luck catching yours. How big is it?
Keep asking... but no takers here at work... if'n they wanna rub cuddles' belly. (JK!)

I'm actually not entirely sure that's what it is...only saw it once, burrowing under the sand near my glass. It was small at the time, maybe 1/4 inch long...haven't seen it in a few weeks...gulp!

Sounds like the lobster fights we used to have at the fish market I worked at when I was a kid....
Very entertaining actually. :D ;)

I WISH I could find someone to send me one, I'd love to have one in either my 10 or 20 that are both currently empty. They are beautiful, even if they are evil

There has definately been a growing interest in those thumb splitters. Some of them sure are beautiful though.

Sandy,
To answer this question, I found my mantis a few weeks ago laying in the dry chamber of my HOT wet/dry filter. I'm not sure how long it had been in there, but it looked pretty dry when I poked at it to see what was laying in my filter. I quickly picked it up (with a spoon and tupperware container of course!) and put it in my 10gal refugium. It's still alive and clicking, and I feed it a meaty treat every other day or so. They are definately neat little critters.

Dang! Guess I'll keep the lid on tight! Yeah, mine is kinda challenging me now. lol. The clicking has stopped (for now) but sometimes if I look into the tank -- it sort of comes out a bit and seems to be showing me it's formidable arms! Doesn't leave the rock... but still.
Didn't even try to bust outta the bag from the fish store. Dunno... I think they are not really "mean" -- I think that the smashing and thrashing is how they eat. My guess is keep 'em fed and happy and don't go poking around the "home".
Guess I'll let cha know since I'm a mantis "newbie"

Hey Sandy, where do you shop for your saltwater fish? I am from Tucson and frequent it all the time. I used to buy fish from Tropics of Tucson on 22nd and Kolb, but they are no longer there. Just wondering.

Hi! Another Arizonian!
There is a Tropics of Tucson on Ft. Lowell just East of 1st. (Between First and Mountain). This is where I buy fish and some supplies. I just prefer to buy fish from them. If I have a fish to return -- that is where I go also. I really trust them with the fish. Though they are expensive.
Rock, specialty items, etc. from Majestic Sea Life. It is on Campbell just North of Ft. Lowell. There is a McDonalds and then a Su
ay in a small shopping area. They are there. Sign says "Saltwater Aquariums". Open Tues-Sat 10-6. I also buy my water there. They have some sweet set-ups! Also a really cool Mantis Shrimp in a tank on the counter.
Every once in awhile -- I'll go to ***** (NOT the one on Broadway!!!! )-- The one across from the Tucson Mall where Baby's R Us is. They seem to keep their systems clean and fish in good health. Cleaner Shrimp were $15.00! And they are doing well in my tank. However - I was not impressed when I was there last week ... guess you gotta check it out for yourself.
Tell me about your set-up! What do you do in Tucson? I work for the City Transportation Department in Management Services/GIS.
