Hello all.
Im deciding to get a 180 gallon tank and make it salt water fish only. I've been into freshwater fish for quite some time now, and I also work at a pet store. Now I was just over at my co-workers house and she's got a 125 gallon tank. I was talking to her husband and he said that when setting up my s/w tank, I should first take some pvc tubing, cut it up and set them on the very bottom of my tank, basically having two 24" at each end, then three 72" at the front, middle and back, then put the smaller leftovers inbetween the rest of the tubing.
Then he said to take some plexiglass wiremess, (very similar to window bug screen, only not metal) and lay that on top of the tubs. He said this will create some kind of bacteria on the bottom of my tank that will help with the biologial filtration or somthing like that. He also said not to shine any light onto them since light will kill them. So my question is, is it a good idea to make one of these? Also he keeps saying that I should use some medium crushed coral, then fine crushed coral and on the very top to put sand. I read on here that most people prefer DSB. IS DSB mainly all live sand that you put on the bottom of your tank? or is it mixed with some crushed coral? This is my first post so I'll have more questions later. Thanks in advace.
