Hi John!

Beautiful tank you have there! Post some more pics if you have them. I am sure I speak for everyone in saying that we would love to see more of the coral in this tank, as well as of the 220 in wall tank.

Howdy John, your intro is oddly fitting the way it sounds like your first introduction to an AA meeting.
Nice tanks, you do the build in yourself to the in-wall? Nice work

Hey John nice tank. I see that you don't have substrate aat your 144g tank. My question is how hard to keep the balance of the cal., mag and other things that need to be in the tank because I bought 125g read reef tank and I'm in the process of learning how to do reef tank. I'm debating wheather I would want to have substrate at the bottom or not. I'm planning on keeping mix coral like softie coral and LSP and couple easy SPS. Teen really help me out good and explain that if I'm going to keep mix coral I should have deep sand bed because it's help to have more nutrient, but I'm still undecide because I see a few other people in this forum that don't have substrate at the bottom, but yet they still be able to keep mix coral. Also one of my LFS they have mix coral set up display one is 65g and one is 125g with no sand bed at the bottom. I asked my LFS how can they keep level and balance of the water chemistry without the substrate and they said that as long as you have more live tank per gallon of the tank that should be able to keep the level. I also asked them why they don't use substrate in there reef tank and the owner told be which he is really good said that it cause a high nirate thats why he don't use them, which is it's because he had 125g reef tank display more three years. Any suggestion on mine and help I'll appreciate.
Thanx
Jay

GhettoTAng: I have be doing reefs for years and I have found that everyone will tell you different..................... I like high flow and no sand bed because sand will hold nitrates and cause algee blooms. With no sand I cant keep all the fish I want like manderins and bennies. I run my tanks dirty and over feed alot. I quite testing years ago. The truth is corals do want to survive. Some things wont make it so if somthing starts looking bad I trade it to a friend better off to care for it. I raise baby clams that are very difficult. I dont feed my corals. My suggestion is stick to easy corals, throw out your test kits, throw out your additives, AND DO YOUR WATER CHANGES. after a while you will notice when somthing isnt right by looking at your corals.
PS: if you mix half Insant Ocean salt with half Oceanic salt and test it your water chemisty , it will be perfect across the board. Test it if you dont belive me.

I would like to welcome you and say you do have beautiful tanks{although the larger one appears to be having nutrient issues}...however....I know people who have lost their whole tank with this 'method'. I also don't understand how a water change can transform the entire volume of the tank to parameters that are 'perfect across the board'. Each tank is different, has different amount of corals, so different amounts of elements get taken up in each. To tell people a blanket statement to just throw away their test kits, stop dosing, and rely on salt mix to maintain everything? I am sorry, but please enlighten me as to how you come to this conclusion?

ten years and hardly ever lost anything.......Like I said, every person will tell you different. Im in the Reef Society and I have gotten frags on the same day as other members and three months later mine is 4 times the size of theres. But I have had SPS frags stay the same size for a year. Right now my montis is growing at an unbeleavable rate..........I like my tanks a little rich in nutients. Most the time I leave my skimmer off. I gave my Typhon 3 rodi unit away because I like tap water!

It may be the tapwater in your area is ok...in some areas the TDS is low. Here in Central FL it is 350. If I were to use tapwater it would be an algae nightmare. I am just trying to caution you as 99% of the people here are young and new to the hobby. They have'nt done this for ten years as you have..they can't tell by just looking at a coral if something is amiss. They need to be testing...
