nice to meet you all.
just thought i would join the message bords and see if i can get a little help along the way of keeping saltwater.
any help and advice is good
i kept a salt water tank fo a year but only kept two clown fish then land lord killed them ; ;.
sprayed air freshner over the tank and polluted water i dint know untill it was too late.
well here is my question/s
i'm just wondering if anyone here has converted a freshwater tank.
if so did u clean out ur filter sponges?
as i converted mine for a while and cleand my sponges out did i do the right thing?
also if anyone could give me adivice on the conversion would be nice.
i took away my fresh water sand and place 1mm crushed coral
i got approx 30kg of it.(fills approx 5mm from the bottom of tank)
tank is 46.9" long and 15.9" wide and 26" tall. (custom built)
theres live rock and old live rock aska dead rock lol
as i hasd a salterwater tank 2 years ago but it was not a converted tank.
also will my tank mature faster due to the fact it was mature tank of 3 years and i left sum good stuff like a hut a fake moss ball tree parts from being fresh to help it along... will this help it along at all??

Your tank comes out to around 83 or 84 gallons.
IMO, i would just start out totaly new. Take everything out wash the tank.(Don't use soap!) Wash with hot water and vinegar. Get rid of the crushed coral and use sand. You could do like half base sand and half "live sand" to save yourself money.
Approximately how many pounds of LR do you have?

hello.
yeah i cleaned it out nice clean down for the glass i take it i did the right thing cleaning out the filter so its like new.... ish
both my LFS's reccomended crushed coral as it helps buffer ph so they said.
buying any form of gravel in uk is very expensive here and my gravel cost me £30 which is a lot for gravel lol
but i do love the crused coral makes it seem more sea world for me.
i was thinking of doing half crushed coral and asnd i tryed it but i dint like it as such.
i'm also following a very nice fish book ive had for like 2 years that my wife baught me. it's quite nifty.
my salt for the tank is on the heavy side but i was aiming for it too "1.020
i was aiming 1.020-1.021
as i see a lot of fish live easy at at an averge of 1.021.
but my book recomends on day 4ish to ad a fish or two to help the tank mature but change like 25% of water each day for a couple of weeks.
at the mo i got anuff time on my hands to do it.
like i've done so far im following the book by heart and all goes well at min.
also here in the uk compared to usd our fish are somewhat more expensive.. and i dont know why
i have how ever took your advice and took out the old features out of the tank.
so all it has now is just rock work.
nice 4kg piece of live rock and a few 1kg's of live rock but i should be getting about 20 pieces more as i do know live rock helps the tank a lot.
plus lets the fish stay less stressed.
i also live near the sea and a mate of mine goes out and farms in the rock pools for his tank hes never paid for any thing in his tak apart from the essetials but live stock is all from local beach but he keeps his temp down onit and a few things hes got are amazing.

There are some really helpful threads on here that should help you out. Have you already filled up with salt water? if so instead of adding fish just add a raw shrimp.
You will need your tests for your cycle:ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH, ALK
refractometer.
Just let your cycle run with daily topoffs and don't do any water changes through your cycles unless your ammonia goes above 1.0.
