We just purchased a decent sized dog face puffer. He started to puff up when the guy at the aquarium shop pulled him from the tank. He's been in our tank for 1/2 hour now and still has a large puffed spot towards his tail - not his entire body. He's obviously very tired so need help! I don't want to loose him!

All is good. I thought about gently pushing the air out of him. Got a hold of a local saltwater aquarium shop and confirmed what needed to be done. He started to puff up fully but birbbed! He's resting comfortably now at the bottom of the tank under a rock. That was really scary!

Glad to hear everything is going OK, I bet it was scary........ When you say "He started to puff up when the guy at the aquarium shop pulled him from the tank." Did they pull the puffer out of the water?
I know my Dogface decided to puff yesterday and today, not sure why but it has.....not even another fish near it ........

Yeah, hopefully the LFS person did not take the dogface out of the water. I am glad that he is doing okay though.

Never lift them out, naughty lfs guy . You should just leave him alone ( as I see you did)There is a little lever in side their "beak". Its on the top. You can gently open it with the clip of a Bic pen cap while holding them under. I worked at a distributor and they'd come in inflated all the time, and it wasn't safe to put them in our tanks that way. Glad he's OK, I love those crazy lookin guys.
