Good point, I don't think you can rule out cyanide. After I mentioned cyanide earlier in the thread, it seemed that some of the dead fish lasted for months....but after re-reading, I'm confused as to when the fish died.
But if I had "cyanide" in my tank, would not all fish be affected?? Plus other signs??
I just answered, I had a diamond gobbie, last just 2 days, then I have had a dwarf angel last a month or more. I have no idea about liver failure, my LFS is very lame, so I really can't go there & talk to them, really about anything.
So, all I know is, I am going to watch my fish that I ahve now & not add any more, about the only thing I know to do, at this point.
Thanks

The cyanide was used to stun the fish to enable the collectors to catch them in the wild and transport them to LFS and dealers. It used to be common practice but is now forbidden in some countries and LFS and dealer will no longer accept fish from collecters if they suspect they were caught using cyanide, the good LFS and dealers anyway. It does not leach out into your tank, it just posions the fish usually ending in their death.

The cyanide is not in your tank. Sodium cyanide is used by fishermen to stun reef fish so they can be easily captured. It poisons the fish and often does permanent damage to their internal organs. Check out this wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanide_fishing

Sadly, the use of cyanide seems to be increasing again. I have bought all my fish online for years and will never change. I know these dealers go to great lengths to avoid cyanide captured fish, but its a tough area to police. I am very wary of buying fish that list an origin as simply "Indo-Pacific".

The sand sifter is not a surprise, IMO...the peak mortality in fish death is 48-72 hours after addition (this is when, for example, and LFS sees peak losses in new fish). It is why it is critical to know how long the fish was at the LFS and whether it was eating. But even then, to have it die after 2 or 3 days is not surprising.
