My wife smelled a faint funny odor earlier today before she left to go shopping when she comes home four hours later the odor is so bad it gives her a headache and upset her stomach. She calls me panicing because we have a 2 month old little boy and assumed it was a gas leak. So I fly off of the golf course and storm into the house like a macho man protecting his family to smell the same odor. It gives me a headache and I can't find a leak anywhere. For the babies sake we called 911 and the fire department came racing in 3 minutes they too smelled the odor but they could not find anything either. Puzzled by the smell they stayed and cheched it out for about 45 mins to an hour only to leave confused and with no answers. I told my wife I thought it was either the Barbie Jeep rechargeable battery that Santa was bringing tomorrow or my fish tank. Guess what it was my fish tank. STUPID ME. So now that the fire department has been by and both of our parents worried to death about their grandbaby, I have to tell them it was a fish tank. Embrassed enough I still need to fix this problem.

I have had my tank for almost 3 months, it is a 46g bf, I have 75 lbs lr, 5 hermit crabs, 1 coral banded shrimp and 1 blue damsel. My levels are all ok except my nitrate is 20 ppm (mg/L). I add water about 2 to 3 times a week, I have the damsel for 2 mths and the rest for about a week.
Any suggestions?
