Ok my LFS thinks it may be a Mantis shrimp that I have in my tank. I have the snaping noise only at night. I am having a problem finding its location. I have staked out the tank and it sounds as of it is comming from the back behind the rocks. I also have tried the bottle trap trick with no luck!
Is there a favorit food that will intice them to come out? What other way's are there to find it? I realy don't wanna have to pull my tank apart.

Thank you for the reply. I will keep trying, but guess worse comes to worse I will have to do my upgrade sooner than I wanted. I know I take the rocks and do a hypo it will cause it to come out.? What salinity should it be at and what should I do for the corals?
Any input apreciated!! :notsure:

First, of all have you noticed any problems in your tank? If it is a mantis shrimp, its probably a small one like N. wennerae which is commonly found on florida live rock. Mantis shrimp can be problems but the majority of the time they'll leave fish and corals alone altogether. If you have any shrimp or small snails they may make an attempt to take out one of these. If you can find what rock he's on I'd just try using seltzer water, it usually does the trick. I would recommend this over dipping every rock with corals attached in hypo-saline (low-salinity) water. Mantis shrimp are very interesting creatures, one day you may find you like him. Whatever you do, if you manage to get him out of the tank, take it to your lfs. There are people who pay for them, so there's no sense in killing the little guy. Good luck.

It could be a pistal shrimp that hitched a ride on one of your rocks. They make similar snapping noises as mantis. hth

Quick question for you? Does it sound like a muffled snapping, like something being hit (ie lr) or just a clicking noise? If you haven't hear the difference between a mantis and a pistol it can be hard to tell, but there is a distinct difference between the sounds.

It was a single snap like pop. Like when a Q-ball is hitting a nother ball (hard). I don't know how else to explain it. But it was loud.

Sorry! No he isn't. I found him in my over flow box when I was cleaning it out. It was to late by the time I saw him.
