I have heard many good things about the Nikon D40. It seems to be decently priced as well.
yes it might work well but its exteremly crippled. and compared to the XTi there is no chance. The XTi focus system is worlds better, it has all the features of the higher up 30D model just a smaller body. It is able to use all the lenses made for the EOS system. the D40 cannot AF with all the lenses made for the nikon. only the ones with the Silent wave motors, and sigma HSM motors

i bought my canon rebel xt with a standard 18-55mm lens from amazon with shipping for $470, that would be your best bet.

depending on what you want..the Sigma 17-70 is a VERY good lens. it has nice range to it, and has a Magnification a 1:2.3 means it will get you pretty close to the subject. It would be a well rounded walkaround lens.
If you wanted straight macro though ther eis the tokina 100mm, sigma 105mm, and tamron 90mm..all of these lens are about $330 at sigma4less.com

ehhh. the only real thing the XSi offers over the XTi is 12mp, and 3" LCD and live view. None of these that will really make any difference in the IQ our outcome of the images from either camera.
I would go for a 30D over an XSi for $700 used..MUCH better build, and better ergonomics.
Also the XSi usues SD cards now..BOOO. CF cards much more robust and the XTi uses CF cards

Make sure you get it for a reputable reseller, there are way to many grey market models that are being sold and are pretty much as is and have no warranty here in the US...do your research
