Help me buy an RO or RO/DI

I have a few questions as to what, why, why not. I know i want a minimum of 50gpd.
I would like to know why some come with tanks and what are the tanks for? Are they for waste water or is it a holding tank for the clean water?
Can these systems be hooked upto my faucet, like a tap water filter system, or do I have to cut my water lines under the sink? What really is the bare bones type, is this something that is worth looking into purchasing? What type of accessories should i be looking at buying with it or look to see which comes with it. I GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP FROM YA'LL .

I got my 75GPD RO/DI system with 5 filter chambers off of ---- for about $139.00. I mounted it over our washing machine and used the tiny tap tool (comes with it) to connect to the cold water intake of the washer. I don't have it set-up as a trickle filter (I top off my tank when I get home from work) with a ball shut off valve because this shortens the life of the filter media (and besides, I would have had to run a line about 25 ft and I just didn't want to).
I haven't had an algae break out that my cleaning crew didn't eat and enjoy since I got the thing. Best $139.00 I've spent on ym tank.

E-Mail me if you want the ultimate Ro/DI hook up. My LFS has a unit custom made for the reef hobby wich is made by a very popular manufacturer, but is only sold by them. Great unit for $300 and 100 GPD!

That is who makes the ones I'm talking about. My LFS tweaked them to Reef Keeping standards and the GURU only makes them for him

Reef Fool,
What else does Walter do to these that adds $100.00 to the price? I have the Typhoon III that has the pressure guage, DI bypass and flush kit. I don't know what else you need so I'm curious? What else brings them up to reef standards. You can't get much better that 0 TDS which is what the Typhoon III does as is. Is most of that just markup your LFS is doing to make money?

i would say that is what it is, lfs making some money. go to the above site and its half the price for the typhoon 1, which by the way isn't different than the other 2 besides a gauge and bypass.

The one thing that I know is that they are a five stage w/ a double DI instead of double carbon cartridge. It has the auto shutoff, gauge, flush kit, TDS meter and clear cartridge covers so you can see the color change on the DI. Booster pump is $100 extra. I may have missed something else. How does this compare to the typhoonIII? I too am curious.
I broke down the pricing for the same unit from spectrapure and it was $765 w/ a booster pump and my LFS sells them for $400 w/ booster and $300 w/o. BTW, I found out that Spectrapure only guarantees a TDS 0f less than 7.

got another question on your RO/DI units.... how often do you change your filters, and how much do the filters cost?

Reef Fool,
The only difference you noted was it has double DI's which I think is overkill. A single DI is good for around 700 gallons of water. This is an actual 700 gallons as all the water that goes through the DI makes it to your container. In other words, the waste water is pulled out pre-DI. That's a years worth of water for me easily.
