Ok I have a 7 year old Akita as some of you know and I am very fond of the breed but I would like to get another dog and need some help.
Here is my list. If you have owned one or know of someone tell me the pros and cons
1. Lab
2. Golden Retriever
3. Pointer
4. German Shorthair Pointer
5. Get another akita
My husband wants another pit bull but living on military posts and possibly renting homes I told him we need to wait until we buy a house for that breed

German Shorhair Pointer - Best dog I ever had, she passed away 2 yrs. ago, because of the bad dog food from the recall - full of personality & tons of energy as a puppy. I was looking for another one & found a weimaraner puppy that I couldn't say no to.

If you have children (or plan to), and since you live on a military post (lots of people around), I would suggest the Golden Retriever.
They are bad at chewing, but as a rule they are smart, sweet and loving, just big teddy bears. Mine lived to be loved on, he would sit all day at my side just for an ear scratch or belly rub. He was good company.
Oh and puppy class is well worth the effort and small amount of money!

Recomend any good breeders of the dog?
seeing that you live on the opposite side of the country (I'm in Ma.) - no, & I don't like seeing puppies flown in boxes. Google & see if there are any GSP clubs out there. I would also recommend a Viszla, it's a cross between a GSP & a Wiemaraner, they stay a little smaller. Goldens & Labs are awesome dogs, but you have to be very careful who you get them from, as they are the most popular dogs & seem to be over-bread.

yea I grew up with a golden and he was a stubborn mule. Annoying alot of the time because he was so hyper. If I get another one or a lab I want to pick a good breeder. Alot of the hyperness is bad genes and poor breeding.

You know they ship them in small dog crates and not boxes right?

I don't care for hyper, but a puppy is going to be a puppy (the golden was my mothers.), that is why I personally have a German Shepherd, He has champion bloodlines and I made sure he had good hips, I insured his health the first two years to be sure. He is protective and beautiful. He was never hyper, not even as a puppy, and smart like you wouldn't believe. However it is an aggressive breed so I don't recommend one unless you want to go through a good training program. I paid $120.00 for the classes. It was well worth it. Here is a picture of them both:

Crate / Box - same thing - I've just always thought it was cruel & traumatic for a puppy. Just my opinion - who knows maybe dogs love flying!

The akitas I know are meaner than the pits I know.
Yep and a whole lot more unpredictable in my experience.
A bad dog is a bad dog. Unfortunately a bad pit can do so much more damage they get the bad press. The morons who run the town I live in banned pits and any dog that looks like a pit or might have pit in it. It is totally subjective, if animal control thinks it has pit in it................
I'd go with the lab, great dogs, easy to find and a good blood line wont cost you your first born.

I don't see "Shelter Dog" on your list anywhere there I said it.
I agree. Why wouldn't you adopt one? All of my animals are rescues.

My Mothers Golden Retriever was a rescue. Here is a picture after his surgery. He had a tumor and his previous owners didn't take care of him.
He fully recovered and the scar was not noticable.
He was such a nice dog. We found him a loving home because my shepherd wouldn't get along with him and they started fighting. I didn't want him hurt. I had my dog since he was 10 weeks old and he wouldn't bond with anyone else, the Golden loved everyone and was easy to find a good home for him. I still miss that big teddy bear.

Female dobies are great dogs. Very family oriented. Though they are chewers until they are two. Thats when they mature.
Both my moms dogs are shelter dogs and they are also great.

I had a lab once that I "rescued" IT WAS NUTS
It ate a couch, a porch, some siding, and when it tried to eat my nephew...WELLL....I had to get rid of it

Most rescues are the nicest dogs/cats/etc you'll ever meet. I worked at a shelter for three years. Sadly many of them had to be put down because no one adopted them.

I've always liked Dobies but wouldn't own one because everyone I've ever known who owned one had them develop a really nasty disposition once they got older. But after thinking about it all 4 of the dogs were males. Might have to re think this one, would love to have a red Dobi.

Reefraff, females are completely different then males. I have owned two females and my mother has had 3. all were very gentle, protective and loved everyone, but also knew who belonged and who didnt. I have always felt very safe with them and my kids.
