American Mastiff!!! awsome dog. Large but doesn't drool like other mastiff breeds. Also they are relatively lazy and don't need a ton of exercize so other than their large size are well suited for an apartment or small home.
awsome dog and is very protective of family and especially small children. This dog does need obedience training though because with its size and power you MUST be able to control it.
how could you refuse a face like that.......

Stick with the Akitas! Best dogs ever! I have 2 from a fantastic breeder here in Colorado if you want a good reference.
Yep, mean vicious dogs!
Lets say this all together,
"Breeds aren't mean, Its all owner stupidity!"

Female dobies are great dogs. Very family oriented. Though they are chewers until they are two. Thats when they mature.
Both my moms dogs are shelter dogs and they are also great.

I've always liked Dobies but wouldn't own one because everyone I've ever known who owned one had them develop a really nasty disposition once they got older. But after thinking about it all 4 of the dogs were males. Might have to re think this one, would love to have a red Dobi.

My family had a bad experience with a femail dobie years ago. We got her from a very reputable breeder who was also a long time friend of the family. She was great for the first year but after that she wouldn't let anyone else in her "social circle" If she knew you already, she was a loving, great dog. Anyone that she didnt know and was meeting for the first time was looked at as an enemy. We ended up having to give her up after she bit 2 of my sisters friends who had come to the house for the first time.

Military base, lots of people coming/going/, potential for children in future....of the listed breeds, in my experience (and there are exceptions) I would go with a rescued (Props to SCSI and Kiki) golden retriever.

I would for sure vote for another Akita, probably my favorite dog.
Lab's and Golden's are so overdone.

Doberman all the way! Once you have one you will never want a different dog! They are the sweetest dogs you will ever have! but its all up to you if i had to pick from the dogs you have there it would be German Shorthair Pointer... I've had one and they are great dogs!

I had a male dobie as a kid / teenager and he was the best. He had a few quirks , like he didn't like his nails clicking on the kitchen linoleum , so only ate on the living room carpet and NEVER went in the kitchen....He passed when his stomach twisted , which is common in barrel chested dogs [ get a elevated food dish ] Puggles are great , smaller and easily trained and FULL of pug attitude...hehe....Labs are great also , especially yellows/blacks....the chocolates seem to be more "high" enegry and more aggresive...beware though they have a long puppy phase , like 3 years. my yellow lab isn't that much of a chewer , oh....he tries , but a firm "NO" will stop him....he's 3 months old and weighs 40lbs, so he's a biggun, and having an older dog will help housebreaking and "learning his place", so he doesn't try the alpha dog thing....which labs and dobies try to do.

I definately have my preferences, and none of them are hunting breeds. Beware of people selling "champion bloodlines". All that means is that they come from show dog pedigrees, and people that show dogs ruin the breed for the job they were originally bred to do. I have a working line DDR German shepherd that I do bite sports with. He is in my avatar. Love Akitas also. The one hunting breed I like is the german wirehaired pointer. Get a dog from working lines not show lines.

I have to disagree, any good breeder will show their dogs, it will not deminish the natural behavior at all.
All the champion bloodline means is that they are in perfect form for that breed of dog.
How you train your puppy is going to determine how gifted he is at whatever job you want him to do. From show to working on the farm, or being a police dog. There are no bad dogs really, just bad owners.
That's why I always put in a plug for puppy classes. It is a very good investment in a creature you will share your life with.

People who breed dogs for work do not show there dogs. This is also why they are considering turning the german shepherd breed into 2 different breeds. Because your american pedigreed show dog is completely the opposite of what Max vom Stephanitz intended the breed to be when he developed it. German pedigreed working shepherds are completely different than the watered down gangly looking american lines. This goes for the Rottweiler and the Doberman too. This is where you show people have ruined many dog breeds. You breed for the $$$$$$$ not for the betterment of the breed or what they were intended to do. You could train your dog for years, but it will never be able to do what my dog or a police dog can do. It's not your fault, it's crappy genetics

I love Shetland Sheep Dogs! They may be small but they are full of heart and smarts! Also if you like Akitas I have been trying to get my wife to let me have a Shiba Inu which is the smallest breed related to the Akita.
