I am not sure how far out of the water they were, My wife complained to me about them ! there is a glass cover over 2/3 of the tank, I saw some crawling at the top of the protein skimmer and on the back near the very top.

Star fish is still hiding I guess

Also, does the lower nitrate level after the water change and another 12 hours a good sign? Or am I not even close to being out of the woods yet ?

Honestly its all about ammonia. You have live critters now they need to eat. That will produce waste. Waste equals ammonia. The nitrates are far less lethal then ammonia

They can vary in color lol yes nothing else for atleast a month and only then if u have no issues
