if there is a jelly like goo at one of the ends then it is a baacterial infection that could have definately been caused by the damsels picking. you can pull it out and dip it in any of the rref dips available today. i have personally used seachems reef dip and i feel that it works great. however, if it is already in the jellylike stage there is usually little hope for it. if you can dip it and quarantine itfor a while you have a better chance of it coming around, but if not i would pull it as soon as possible or the bacterial infection can spread to your other corals which might be that case as to why your shrooms are looking funny. another possibility is that it could already be releasing nitrates into the tank, causing your other corals to stress. i would suggest puling the brain into a q tank or throwing it, and then doing a decent sized water change.
sorry to hear about the brain. they are sweet corals.
good luck
