my LFS is having a sail on Fluval 304's, I can't remember what the price is, but it's cool. Recently, they had a sale on 404's for only $100! The one's they have now are cheaper than that... If you're interested, I'll find out the price, maybe I could ship it to ya...

This is exactly why I stopped using canisters. Not to mention the leaks, leaks, leaks.
I am sure you can get a replacement. However, what worked for me on several occassions with my fluval [when I had it] was to take off the top, open up the compartment, clean everything out including the rotating propeller.
By chance did water come in contact with the plug? If so, it may be shorted out.
If you check out your manual there should be a "parts" section and phone numbers, etc. to call to order parts, ask questions, etc.
Don't spend a lot of money on this. This peice of equiptment is not worth it. Better to find a better, and more user-friendly filter.
Call them! The same thing happened to mine and they replaced the top where the motor is.

Well I figured a new fluval 404 is around $120. so I broke my piggie bank, Got me a wet and dry filter for $350, Is great way better that canister, plus lifetime warranty. So never mind the canisters....;)
