This is exactly why I stopped using canisters. Not to mention the leaks, leaks, leaks.
I am sure you can get a replacement. However, what worked for me on several occassions with my fluval [when I had it] was to take off the top, open up the compartment, clean everything out including the rotating propeller.
By chance did water come in contact with the plug? If so, it may be shorted out.
If you check out your manual there should be a "parts" section and phone numbers, etc. to call to order parts, ask questions, etc.
Don't spend a lot of money on this. This peice of equiptment is not worth it. Better to find a better, and more user-friendly filter.
Call them! The same thing happened to mine and they replaced the top where the motor is.
