I have a Rio 3100 on my 125 and it's not doing it's job.
There is alot of PVC in my system so that I know is not helping for the lack of pumping power.
How big should I go and can I over do it with to big of a pump?
Can I use a pump from Home Depo or lowes?

I have a allglass tank with 2 over flows.
There are two holes in each side.It looks like one 3/4 and a 1.5 (but I don't really know)
There is abought 15 to 20 ft of PVC. I have ball valves to control flow.(open all the way now) it is piped with flow to the right and flow to the left side. I know 45's are bad to use but there are a few of them being used to get the way I need pump is 4.5 ft under the tank..
Thanks foryour help.

I haven't had time to check the numbers yet but I'll say that if it has 1.5 and 1.75 I/O then it's putting out some SERIOUS water. Regarding HD and Lowes having pumps, here in FL they don't carry ANY pumps that are saltwater safe, believe me I looked. Also if you try to special order the safe Little Giant pumps the price is outrageous and they WILL NOT honor their "beat or meet price" deal on special orders. Bottom line for me was to look for the pump online and just buy the plumbing supplies from Lowes.

do you think the over flow would be able to handle the Dolphin Aqua Sea 3000 (3000 gph) or the 3600 (3600 gph).or Is it to big for my tank I want to use this pump with ball valves to control my return,Protein Skimmer,UV,ect

Again without running the numbers, my gut reaction is you'd be fine with those overflows. If not, the addition of ball valves would take care of any minor shortfalls. Is it overkill? hmmmmm I'd say possibly but others will argue. Remember if you're using the single pump to drive all your water needs, if it goes out, it's panic time!

I am using a Dolphin DP 900 on my 125 gallon. (900 gph at 0 head, 17 ft head max)
I have two hang-on overflows with 1 inch pipes. I have 4.5 feet height to overcome, a swing check valve at the pump (McMaster-Carr online, check it out if you are interested), a tee that splits the return into two lines, one for each corner. My tank is 6 feet long, so I have about 10 feet of pipe on the return side. There are two elbows in each corner where the return lines go into the tank. All of my plumbing is 1 inch flex pvc or braided clear vinyl. I am using the pump as a submersible, in sump.
I was worried that my pump was not big enough, but in actuality I have to trim back the flow with a ball valve. More than just a little bit. This pump is very, very quiet and far more powerful than I thought.
I hope this helps
Good Luck,
-Christine
